Goal and Action 17: Education

Houston provides high quality bilingual public education in schools that are safe and have highly trained teachers and small classes. (4.2)

Actions Proposed by Participants

• Require that all teachers be certified.
• Require that teachers participate in professional development including computer literacy courses.
• Ensure that fifty percent of Houston's teachers are bilingual (Spanish, Vietnamese, etc.).
• Assess student's development with an array of oral and verbal testing.
• Reduce class sizes.
• Provide physical education and after school programs.
• Make schools safe with more police officers, metal detectors, strict visitation guidelines, and conflict resolution classes.
• Encourage students to look after one another.
